The before-and-after photos show that much was achieved at the ‘autumn clear-up’ held by PCA with Prestwood Nature at the Sheepwash Pond. Cold and wet weather may, sadly, have dampened the enthusiasm of ‘new’ volunteers. Despite much publicity, the dozen who turned out were all PCA and Prestwood Nature members.

This complex project will need to be approached in several stages and there will be further opportunities for others to be involved. We anticipate a further event, probably in late February/early March – look out for the invitation!

The autumn clear-up, ‘phase one’, achieved its objective. This was to cut back overgrown hedges, clear brambles and other undergrowth, remove rubbish and improve access. The pond itself is too great a project to have been tackled at this stage, and the dilapidated viewing platform is marked strictly off limits.

Through the clear-up, PCA also hoped to raise the profile of Sheepwash Pond. Now that it is clearer, perhaps some residents might enjoy sitting at the table and benches on a fine winter’s day. But we warn all to heed the danger that the platform presents, and the pond itself.

Going forwards…

Sheepwash Pond should be a well-loved historical landmark and natural amenity. We hope that it can become so once again. To learn more of its background, visit Prestwood Nature page on Sheepwash Pond.

The autumn clear-up can only make a start on what is needed. A serious complication is that ownership of the Sheepwash Pond site is unknown, and with it, clarity on responsibility. Whilst PCA was happy to initiate a limited clear-up, it will NOT assume legal responsibility for the site. A problem solving approach will be needed to find a long-term solution for the ownership and long-term future of the site. PCA will be happy to hear from villagers interested in taking a longer term interest.
